The Arbutus Public Library Historic Mural Project is the culmination of a year-long process led by UMBC Visual Arts Professor Lynn Cazabon in conjunction with three undergraduate photography students Christina Danaher, Marlayna Demond, and Sam Ganger. The UMBC team met with Arbutus Public Library manager Gail Ross and members of the Arbutus community to come up with a general theme for the project, which focused on the history of the railroad in the towns served by the library. Professor Cazabon and her students searched through library and county archives and the Maryland Historical Society for appropriate photographs, digitally repaired and processed each image for large-scale printing, and created an overall layout design for the installation of the prints in the new library. The eleven mural prints are on long-term view at the library and will be accompanied by an informational brochure.
