Hadie Shafie, IMDA '04 alumna, is one of three recipients of the Mary Sawyers Baker Prize, the top award in the Baker Artist Awards, which was an online competition to recognize artists living in Baltimore and five surrounding counties. The three $25,000.00 awards were selected by a jury from among 656 entries; the award is made possible by the William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund.

Hadieh Shafie was born in Iran and immigrated to the United States in 1983. The themes explored in Shafie's work are the temporary nature of memory, history and personal experiences related to otherness and the Iranian diaspora.

After graduating from Pratt Institute in 1999 with an MFA in Painting, Shafie accepted a fellowship at UMBC, where she received a second MFA in Imaging and Digital Arts in 2004. Shafie's work has been included in numerous exhibitions in the mid-Atlantic region; most recent exhibitions include Pyramid Atlantic in Silver Spring Maryland, Abrons Art Center, New York City & Saw Gallery in New Jersey, Maryland Art Place, School 33 and Goucher College in Baltimore.
