Eric Smallwood's creative practice includes utilizing elements of video, photography, animation and installation art.

Informed by an interest in biology and the nature of attention, his personal creative works attempt to dissect the experience of the moment in relation to memory by creating works that incite viewers to slip between immediate sensual experience and reflective thought. His works have been exhibited regionally at the Boombala Video Cabaret and Metro Gallery in Baltimore city, as well a solo exhibition at the Gibbs Street gallery of VisArts at Rockville, Md.

Trained as a digital artist, Smallwood worked professionally for a decade as the Technical Director of the Imaging Research Center at UMBC, specializing in the areas of 3D animation, game design and video production. His works contributed to many unique research collaborations with partners including the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Walters Art Museum, the Maryland Historical Society, the National Science and Engineering Festival, Maryland Public Television, NASA, Political Cartoonist Kevin Kal Kallagher, as well as many internal collaborations with UMBC Faculty.

Professor Smallwood holds both a degree in Computer Animation (BA) and Imaging and Digital Art (MFA) from UMBC.
